Summer Day-Retreats

July 1 and August 7 from 10am - 4pm with Monique

"We have become haunted pilgrims addicted to distraction and driven by the speed and color of images.'"

- John O'Donohue, from Beauty: The Invisible Embrace

We live in a busy and overstimulated society. Most of us no longer take a weekly abstinence from work and often find ourselves exhausted on all levels. Here's an invitation to take a day for yourself -- to disconnect from distraction and reconnect with your quiet wisdom -- to rest deeply. Together we'll explore yin, restorative, dru, and yoga nidra interspersed with periods of silent meditation in the Vipassana tradition.

Drawing from almost 40 years of contemplative practices and 18 years of ordained monasticism, Monique seeks to create a space where you can unfurl and sink into yourself. She is an experienced retreat facilitator, trauma-informed yoga teacher and therapist. As well as teaching in the community she has a private practice focused on emotional & mental well-being. Aging Gracefully with a Youthful Spine

To age with grace ~ live with grace October 16, 2-4:30 with Alexandra Rodruiguez.

The health of our spine is truly the “back bone” to our intrinsic health & well being. In this workshop we will explore the interconnectedness of our spine with the whole body and how this affects the quality of our health, vitality and ability to age gracefully.

We will explore a gentle, restorative flow and the Five Tibetan Rites for healing, rejuvenation and longevity. Designed by the Lamas of Tibet, the Rites represent a system of exercises that affect the body, emotions and mind. The Tibetans claim that these exercises activate and stimulate the seven key chakras (energy centers within the body) that in turn stimulate all the glands of the endocrine system, responsible for the body's overall functioning and the ageing process. Variations will be given to make these 5 Rites accessible to ALL body types and abilities.

"You are as old as your Spine" (Chinese proverb). We will also use the BackMitra, an ingenious yoga prop to unravel tension in your spine and bring space into your whole body. Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, you will re-discover your spine! Mindful breath inquiries & experiential anatomy will accompany the duration of the workshop which will graciously end with savasana and a closing meditation.

Mindfulness Practice with Shayna

Building Resiliance

Resilience is different than endurance. Resilience is bounce-back ability.

It’s staying well in the face of challenges.

This class combines theory with practice. In plain language neuroscience, you’ll learn about the brain & body’s hard-wired reactions to what’s going on around us. When it gets to be too much, our stomach churns, the jaw or neck tightens. You’ll be offered activities to learn your own unique signs that tell you when tension is beginning to seep in. We’ll then practice techniques to bring relief right in the moment.

The goal of these classes is to energize you as you build your repertoire of actions you can use anytime to support your body.

Shayna Hornstein is a body-oriented psychotherapist and registered physical therapist. A seasoned & skilled teacher, she is described as being “informative, refreshing, tuned in to the participants and engaging.” Her organizational development work improves communication and health in the workplace. Shayna also has a private clinical and coaching practice that focuses on helping people lessen the impact that stress has on our bodies.

Join us for a three night retreat to Salt Spring Island Oct 1-4, 2015

One of our biggest challenges of modern day living is to live harmoniously with nature and the changing seasons. Autumn is a time to harvest the bounty we grew in summer, to store and prepare for the winter ahead, and is associated with the metal element, signifying contraction and introspection, as opposed to the upwards and outwards movement of the fiery summer. It is a time to reflect, to receive what is of essential worth, and to let go of what is not useful to us.  Retreat to the serene natural environment of Stowel Lake Farm on Salt Spring Island and take time to nourish your body, mind and soul.

A New Perspective on Health, Sunday June 1st 1:30-4:30pm

Bernice Hayibor will present a brief introduction to research that connects our so called “diseases” to our emotional distresses. This new understanding can empower you to take charge of your own health in a way that is totally natural, and release you from the fear of “disease” that is so powerful in our current society.

On the basis of over 40,000 case studies, Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, MD., has proven that “diseases” are not malfunctions of the body but are meaningful biological programs designed by nature to assist us during a time of unexpected distress. The psyche, a specific area in the brain, and the correlating organ are simultaneously affected.

Each meaningful biological program has two phases, provided the distress can be resolved. In the conflict active phase, the person experiences constant thinking about the shock, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, and cold hands but rarely feels “ill”. The healing phase begins when the distress is resolved emotionally. As the affected tissue undergoes recovery and repair, “disease” is often diagnosed. Pain, swelling, discharge, infection, fever, and fatigue are usually clear signs that the body is healing as nature intended.

CT scans of the brain consistently support this new perspective of the Five Biological Laws discovered by Dr. Hamer and now available to all of us.

Bernice received her Bachelor of Home Economics Degree from UBC, and spent two years teaching in Ghana, West Africa, with CUSO. Upon returning to Vancouver, she taught Foods and Nutrition for the Vancouver School Board while raising two children. After obtaining her MA in Education at UBC, Bernice worked 10 years in administration before retiring.

Having always been interested in health and healing, Bernice was captivated by German New Medicine as soon as she heard of it. Inspired by the amazing work of Dr. Hamer, study of GNM has taken priority since 2006. Teaching GNM has now replaced much of the usual relaxation of retirement. Bernice continues to study GNM with Caroline Markolin, Ph.D. in Austria and now offers a complete series of 2-day GNM Study Sessions in Vancouver. These are designed to assist others in learning the details of this beautiful and totally natural understanding of medicine.

Bound Lotus Workshop Sunday May 4th

with Donna Alstad

Ten years ago Donna Alstad was inspired by Mahan Kirn’s story of great healing through the practice of Bound Lotus Kriya. Taking her class at Summer Solstice, Donna started practicing this remarkable technology each day for nine years. She believes it gave her a profound re-connection to her heart as well as deeply releasing the self-undoing patterns carried by ancestral DNA.

In this pivotal time with paradigms shifting at every level, the most important aspect of our journey here is to know the nature and power of our heart and our capacity to love and accept ourselves. Living in a very mind centred universe, this is our greatest need right now to give life real meaning and balance.

Donna believes it was the awakening practice of Bound Lotus that birthed this awareness within her. She enjoys teaching others how to use this practice to attain the same state.

Donna has been practicing, studying and teaching Kundalini Yoga for over 20 years. She has offered a variety of specialty classes and workshops throughout those years, teaching prenatal and Mom and Baby yoga, kid’s yoga and in-depth courses on the many facets of Kundalini yoga. She was also co-owner of Sat Nam Yoga Centre in North Vancouver from 2006-2011.

She currently teaches yoga at Bound Lotus Meditation and Yoga Centre on the North Shore, singing Kirtan at special events there, as well as practicing Vedic astrology and studying the art of healing with essential oils.

Water is the element of the Womb, we are all born of water. Water is considered a Feminine element for its qualities of fluidity and softness, and its nurturing and life sustaining properties. But yet Water contains an immense amount of power – consider the power contained within the Tsunami wave, or a huge waterfall. The power of Water can move and carve out mountains and gorges, it can wash away clean that which has served it’s purpose, and it can help bring us back into connection with the purity and innocence of the Womb’s true knowing.

Come join us as we dive into discovering the watery depths of our wise and wonderful Wombs!

This workshop will offer a mini taster of Womb Awakening ~ in the workshop Andrea will share further info on how you can dive deeper into this powerful work if you feel so called to do so.

RETREAT TO SALT SPRING ISLAND

Sept 26-29th at Stowel Lake Farm with Emily and Sue

One of our biggest challenges of modern day living is to live harmoniously with nature and the changing seasons.

Autumn is a time to harvest the bounty we grew in summer, to store and prepare for the winter ahead, and is associated with the metal element, signifying contraction and introspection, as opposed to the upwards and outwards movement of the fiery summer. It is a time to reflect, to receive what is of essential worth, and to let go of what is not useful to us.

Retreat to the serene natural environment of Stowel Lake Farm on Salt Spring Island and take time to nourish your body, mind and soul.

There are many healers in this world and countless beings in search of healing. And yet, what is healing? Who heals? What is sickness? And who is sick? Healing in Shamanism is about seeing and hearing deeply. BIO

Theodore Tsaousidis has been conscious of his spiritual journey from an early age. Born in a rural community in Greece surrounded by mountains and valleys, he was profoundly shaped by nature and the ancient tradition of village elders and healers. His connection to nature and the spirit world is an integral part of who he is—as is his dedication to the Zen training he has followed for 30 years. He is also blessed by the guidance of the Venerable Zasep Tulku Rinpoche. His healing and shamanic sharing stem from, his cultural roots, personal experience, and Tibetan and Buddhist traditions. Balanced Output: A Yoga Workshop on the Chakras with Voice and String Trio

On Sunday February 24th, from 2-4pm, join Unity's Charlotte Herst, with Christina Rzepa and Melissa Bandura, who will accompany you with voice, violin and cello in a unique gentle yoga practice

It'll be one of those amazing experiences you aren't likely to forget. Using gentle yoga postures, and the beautiful sounds of violin, cello and voice, we'll explore the chakras physically and cellularly, travelling from the root chakra up to the crown. Easefully open your ribs, hips, heart and shoulders. The music and postures will peacefully guide you to a deeper intimacy with your emotional centres and cleanse you from the inside out. You will leave renewed, and inspired, marinaded in a deep understanding of your wholeness. Everyone welcome.

Balanced Output is a recently formed trio composed of professional musicians and Yoga teachers. Members of this group share the common goal of re-balancing and re-booting the body through music and movement. The group has lovingly created a repertoire of sounds that perfectly compliment yin/restorative poses meant to open the body, relax the breath and quiet the mind.

The trio consists of:

Christina Rzepa is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist. Her cello, flute, vocal, and piano work have been featured on over 50 albums, several short films and countless live performances. She currently plays with The Gentle Infidels, The Creaking Planks, Les Mains D’Isabelle, and The Inference. She also curates the Vancouver chapter of Classical Revolution.

Melissa Bandura is a true yinster at heart. She studied yin and meditation with gurus Sarah Powers, Padma and Bernie Clark. Adding Restorative training to her repertoire, Melissa provides a safe and peaceful environment for her students. Her melodious violin playing adds a depth to the poses that no taped music can mimic. Her ultimate goal for her classes is to provide the suitable ambiance for self-exploration.

Charlotte Herst is a loving yoga teacher who sings professionally in solo and choral settings. She believes that music, like yoga, powerfully permeates our skin and hearts, and ultimately brings home the calm remembrance that everything is connected. Charlotte teaches 'Come Home to Your Voice' workshops, which explore the relationship between yoga and singing.

Each day, moon, year and hour have an element associated with them, and when we understand the nature of these elemental interactions we can begin to respond with skill and clarity under any flow.

Come and learn how this year, the Year of the Water Snake, will affect you. Find out your Day Master (Self-Element) and receive a calendar that will help you to mindfully track your flow through time.

This powerful method of Chinese Astrology (BaZi) has been used for thousands of years and is the foundation for Classical Feng Shui.

Susan has been studying under Master Marlyna Los for the past six years in Vancouver and has also learned from Lily Chung, Ph.D. and Jerry King. She also studies the art and science of Classical Feng Shui. She offers BaZi Chinese Astrology, Tarot, and I-Ching readings out of her Teahouse here in Vancouver.

Shaman Medicine and Yoga

Join Theodore Tsaousidis Sunday September 30th from 1:30pm-4:30pm for a talk on shamanism, medicine, and yoga

Seventy thousand years ago on a plateau, a human being sensed the wind caress her body. At that moment she remembered the language of the earth. There was no duality in the response. The mind was there but something bigger was in relationship with her body/world. This experience, the act of listening to nature and reciprocal response is what we call yoga. Mindfulness is that organic attention to one’s body/mind/ world. The shamanic path or experience is that primordial

relationship available to all of us helping us reconnect to earth, our bodies, to all things animate and inanimate. Through sound, movement, and personal mandalas, we will experience yoga and mindfulness rooted in shamanism – a full embrace of the sacred.

Theodore Tsaousidis has been conscious of his spiritual journey from an early age. Born in a rural community in Greece surrounded by mountains and valleys, he was profoundly shaped by nature and the ancient tradition of village elders and healers. His connection to nature and the spirit world is an integral part of who he is – as is his dedication to the Zen training he has followed for 30 years. He is also blessed by the guidance of the Venerable Zasep Tulku Rinpoche, director and teacher of the Zuru Ling Society in Vancouver and Tashi Choling in Nelson, B.C. His healing and shamanic sharing stem from, his cultural roots, personal experience, and Tibetan and Buddhist traditions. Theodore sees shamanism and meditation as a great alchemy for the healing of self and others.

Graceful Warriors Workshop ~ Womb Empowerment

Inviting all sisters to join us in reclaiming the creative power of our wild, wise and wonderful Wombs! Join Andreia St.Jules and Naomi Gibb Sunday May 27, 1:45-4:45pm for this special workshop in the Graceful Warriors series.

We live in a society that has served to cut us off from the deeply creative, intuitive feminine power and wisdom that resides within our womb space. Except for women who have had children, our attention is rarely drawn into our womb aside from perhaps a few days a month when we experience 'cramping and discomfort' associated with menstruation. As a result we as women have experienced a dis-connect from the ultimate source of our true power. Reclaiming our womb wisdom is a very crucial part of empowering and embracing the Divine Feminine, of healing our Mother Earth, and healing the next generation who will be nurtured and birthed from within our newly empowered wombs!

This workshop will offer you an opportunity to:

~ Connect deeply into the creative power inherent within your womb space ~ your "womb wisdom".

~ Begin to cultivate an intimate relationship with your Womb

~ Re-connect with your natural feminine cycles, and align yourself with the Womb of Mother Earth.

~ Cultivate a new relationship with the sensations and experiences of your menstrual time, and begin to heal any wounding around your understanding and expression of your cycles.

~ Connect and share with other women, and support one another as we tap into our true Feminine Power!

Join us in sisterhood to reclaim that wisdom which is innately ours and become part of an ever expanding consciousness of empowered women ~ birthing a new sacred balance in direct alignment with the great mother of us all ~ our Mother Earth!

Spirit Voice Kirtan

Join us for an Evening of Spirit Voice Saturday March 10th, 7:30-9:30pm

“Spirit Voice was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had in my entire life. It was truly touching spirit and feeling one with not just other people but with myself and with God.” ~ Kelley G.

Share your voice in spirit and song using simple mantras sung in English and Sanskrit (the ancient language of India). The mantras are sung in the style of kirtan, the sacred devotional music tradition originating from India. They are repeated over and over, faster and faster, calling upon sacred energies which serve to remove obstacles, bring us back to the center of our being and into an experience of freedom from the daily chatter of the mind. We move into meditative qualities which can carry us effortlessly to a place of transcendence and stillness.

Please note this is not a performance; rather it is an opportunity to share your voice in a safe and loving environment. Lyric sheets will be provided.

Spirit Voice leads events twice a month at various locations in and around Vancouver. For more information and to receive information on upcoming events please join our Facebook Group.

"I'm filled with gratitude for the great evening of singing put on by your group, Spirit Voice. Your gift of song and voice allowed me to heal a part of my heart that has been asking for some attention. Your music also helped me to connect with my voice again so that I could communicate what needed to be communicated in my life. Thank you for these incredible gifts. And thank you to Spirit Voice for being my difference maker." ~ Kirsten W.

Brane-Power Presentation

Come and experience the Brane-Powered shamanic technology of EJ Gold – the prolific spiritual teacher, artist, musician and author of the seminal ‘American Book of the Dead’. Sunday August 7th, 1:30 to 3:30

The Beacon is a powerful inner-work tool which uses vintage crystal radio technology to lower the brainwave frequency, allowing deeper states of consciousness to come forth easily and naturally.

The Beacon inductions allow access to your Parallel Universe Personae (PUPs), so you can strap them, and integrate their life experience, knowledge and skills. This is a lot like traditional shamanic voyaging and soul-integration, viewed through the recent advances in modern physics. The deeper states brought about by the beacon allow the user to easily cross the membranes between their own parallel universes.

There is also a set of short, powerful guided inductions/meditations that are designed to help with different things. They are: Prosperity, Inner Beauty, Spirit Guide, Energizer, Self-Esteem, Wellness, Worry, Psychic Self-Defense, True Love and Lucid Dreaming. These inductions are assisted and facilitated by the deep, relaxing delta waves of the Beacon, allowing them to work at an unusually deep, therapeutic level that is noticeably life-changing, empowering and also very enjoyable and relaxing.

A selection of EJ Gold’s Crystal Quantum Radio Amulets (CQRs) will be on sale at special introductory prices. Having a CQR circuit in your personal field allows you to experience similar effects to the Beacon, and carry it with you everywhere. They have many benefits of different kinds, and they all allow the deeper resources of the Essence/Spirit to shine through more easily and spontaneously, by gently quieting the frantic, anxious Beta-frequencies of fear-based ego stress, which are such an unfortunate symptom of many people’s daily grind in 21st century life on Earth.

A short presentation will be given by Sé Duggan and Jaswant Baines, two of EJ Gold’s long-time students, and then four Beacons will be available for use. We hope to see you there, and are very happy to be able to share with you one of the most exciting and powerful recent advances in the vast field of inner work. Reawakening Your Empathic Self with Theodore Tsaousidis, Shaman.

This Saturday, July 16th 7-9 pm.

For most, this is in vain for we are living an imposed dream. This imposed dream is a projection from outside ourselves which has been forced, coerced or manipulated, even imprinted on our very being. It can be difficult to differentiate between our true heart and this dream of the status quo. Often, we do not recognize that it is alien. How do we differentiate when to be part of society for most of us, means to conform? As we yield to obvious and subtle forces, our own ability to perceive our intuitive and empathic self becomes weak, falling dormant.

The good news is that perception is more than a mental process. As you learn to perceive with your whole body/mind, you learn to perceive the truth of your own inner authentic nature. When you open to your empathic self, you change -- and family and community begin to change with you. Thus, the empathic self – through its living example invites others to arouse from their own imposed dreams.

Through sharing and practice, this talk will invite us to reawaken to our empathic self.

Saturday July 16th, 7-9pm

$20 suggested donation.

Theodore sees shamanism and meditation as a great alchemy for the healing of self and others. www.sittingatthegate.ca

Yantra Yoga or the Yoga of Movement, is one of the oldest recorded systems of Yoga that exists in the world. It is a system of Yoga that has come to us through Tibet, a land full of a vast and rich traditional Buddhist knowledge and wisdom. This uninterrupted lineage of Yantra Yoga is a fundamental method to integrate the profound essence of the Dzogchen Teaching in the three doors (body, voice and mind) of the practitioner. Through positions and movements combined with breathing, one’s energy is coordinated and harmonized so as to let the mind relax and find its authentic balance, which is the basis for contemplation.

Emphasis will be on cultivating presence and awareness while developing and deepening our understanding and experience of the breath, both within the Yantras (movements) and the Pranayamas (breathing methods). This course is the foundation for further study and practice of Yantra Yoga.

Tibetan Buddhist "Mahamudra of Chod" Healing Ceremony

"Chod" is a tradition of Tantric meditation practiced by all schools of Buddhism in Tibet and its unbroken lineage of blessings and teachings continue to this day.

"Mahamudra of Chod" is a tradition of Tibetan Buddhism founded by famous female saint and mystic, Machig Labdron [1055-1149]. Chod is often called the "beggar's offering" wherein practitioners, through their meditation and shamanically inspired chanting and drumming cultivate a "solar economy" of boundless generosity to all beings. They cultivate an open heart of love and compassion for all life and a mind of peace and gentleness. Traditionally, Chod practitioners ("Chod-pas") lived the free life of homeless mendicants - wandering on pilgrimage from place to place and offering healing rituals for the sick, poor, needy and dying.
